According to NBC News, Redd was scheduled to perform a standup set at the Comedy Cellar in New York’s Greenwich Village neighborhood on the night of Wednesday, Oct. 26. When he exited a car in front of the venue around 9:30 p.m., he was punched by an unknown individual. According to authorities, the attack was completely unprovoked and the person didn’t say anything to Redd before punching him. Following the attack, emergency services came to the scene and Redd was sent to the hospital. NBC New York reports that police said the comedian was treated for a cut on his face and was then released. Fabrizio Cavallacci, who owns Caffe Reggio, which is next to the Comedy Cellar, told NBC New York, “Huge pool of blood. Huge. This poor guy was bleeding. The manager was trying to stop the bleeding.” The owner of the Comedy Cellar, Noam Dworman, told NBC New York, that those at the club are “deeply upset about what happened and we hope he’s okay. We want him back as soon as possible.” The person who attacked Redd has not yet been identified, but, according to TMZ, surveillance video footage shows the alleged perpetrator. TMZ also reports that the person was wearing brass knuckles, and that Redd was left with two black eyes and a gash on his nose. Redd was a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2017 until earlier this year when he announced he would not be returning for the new season that just premiered last month.
