2 Social Media Responds
Twitter commenters were both awed by and introspective about the images. “Feels wrong calling something beautiful that will threaten lives and cause so much destruction – but from above, hurricanes are stunning,” said one Twitter user. “I hope everyone in Ian’s path stays safe.” “Powerful image. Feels wrong to ’like’ it. Praying for those who will be affected,” said an Instagram commenter. “This is kinda wild how big these storms/hurricanes can be,” said one Twitter user. “Every year they just keep getting bigger and bigger too,” commented another.
3 Preparations for Ian
Ian became a category 3 hurricane on Monday, with winds measured at about 125 miles per hour. The hurricane was gathering strength on Tuesday and could become a category 4 storm later in the day, forecasters said. The storm is expected to make landfall on the western Florida coast and may affect a wide area of the state.
4 5,000 National Guard Troops Mobilized
Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a statewide emergency and mobilized 5,000 National Guard troops to help with rescue and relief efforts. Gov. Brian Kemp declared an emergency in the state of Georgia, which is expected to be affected by the storm. President Joe Biden also declared an emergency, authorizing the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide disaster relief.
5 Millions Urged to Evacuate
More than 2.5 million people in the area have been advised to evacuate. On Tuesday, President Biden urged those who should evacuate to do so, and said evacuations were proceeding in a “fairly orderly” way. “Your safety is more important than anything,” he said. “I know our hearts are with everyone who will feel the effects of this storm, and we will be with you every step of the way. We aren’t going away.“ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb
