Ian became a category 3 hurricane on Monday, with winds measured at about 125 miles per hour. The hurricane was gathering strength on Tuesday and could become a category 4 storm later in the day, forecasters said. Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a statewide emergency and mobilized 5,000 National Guard troops to help with rescue and relief efforts. Gov. Brian Kemp declared an emergency in the state of Georgia, which is expected to be affected by the storm. President Joe Biden also declared an emergency, authorizing the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide disaster relief. 5 Millions Urged to Evacuate
More than 2.5 million people in the area have been advised to evacuate.
