The Family Vacation Guide recently looked to determine how much hotel prices have changed throughout the country since 2019. According to the Florida-based travel company’s new study, the average rate of hotel stays in the U.S. has increased by 200 percent as a whole over the last four years. “With the rise of the coronavirus pandemic, hotels in the U.S. are seeing the biggest price hike in years,” Kate Brassington, a content strategy manager and co-founder of The Family Vacation Guide, wrote in July. “Many popular tourist cities across the country cost more than double for accommodation compared to three years ago.” This might be especially troublesome for families, as “family-friendly hotels are seeing the biggest price increase,” according to Brassington. But it ultimately comes down to what city you are looking to stay in. The Family Vacation Guide compared the cost of a one-night stay in a 3-star hotel between June 2019 and June 2022 in some of the most popular tourist destinations for families in the U.S., and found some major differences. With this data, the travel company was able to narrow down the 10 U.S. cities where hotel prices have risen the most. Hotel price increase: 140 percent This major city in Minnesota might fall last on the list of top 10 hotel increases, but prices have still risen higher here than in most other U.S. cities. According to The Family Vacation Guide’s data, the average cost of a hotel stay here was $177 in 2019. But in 2022? It’s $425. Hotel price increase: 144 percent It’s no surprise that Las Vegas can be a pricey place. But in 2019, you could score a hotel room in this casino-heavy city for an average of just $110 a night. Hotel price increase: 154 percent There are many popular cities scattered throughout the great state of California. But San Diego in particular has seen one of the highest hotel price hikes in the country over the past few years. The Family Vacation Guide found that guests were asked to pay an average of $164 in 2019 to stay in a San Diego hotel. In 2022, however, the new average price per night is $416. Hotel price increase: 155 percent With both Disney World and Universal Studios in one place, Orlando is certainly a popular vacation spot for families. This wasn’t a major issue in 2019 when the average price of a hotel was just $121. Unfortunately, this may not save you much money these days. In 2022, it will cost you an average of $625 each night to stay in a hotel you could have paid $218 for in 2019. Hotel price increase: 189 percent Boston is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New England, so many people may be considering traveling to the historic capital of Massachusetts for a fall getaway. If you’re looking to save money, however, you might want to factor its higher hotel prices into your decision. According to The Family Vacation Guide’s data, the average 2019 price of a hotel stay in Boston was $169. The average price now is closer to $488. Hotel price increase: 196 percent If you’re looking to go somewhere warm to get away from the winter chill, Miami might be on the top of your list. Sadly, this popular coastal city has seen once of the highest hotel price increases in the entire country. What once might have cost you just $138 a night in 2019 could now run you $409. Hotel price increase: 200 percent Chicago is “well known for its impressive architecture and amazing food, including deep-dish pizza and hotdogs,” The Family Vacation Guide says. But now it’s also known for being a much more expensive place to stay than it once was. In Chicago, you could have spent $107 in 2019 for a one-night stay at a 3-star hotel. The same will now cost you $321 in 2022. That doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. The travel company’s data shows that in June 2019, a one-night stay in a 3-star New York City hotel cost an average of $228. Today, one night is several hundred dollars more. The average 2022 hotel price here is $743. Hotel price increase: 252 percent Hawaii is a dream vacation spot for many people, though it can come with a hefty price tag, as you have to factor in a long and often expensive flight. Hotels are going to cost you, too. In 2019, you needed to add in an average hotel price of $186 a night to your budget. That has since increased by 252 percent—which is the highest jump in the entire country. The current average rate? That would be $654. “There are several reasons why Honolulu has seen the biggest increase in hotel prices,” The Family Vacation Guide explains. “To name a few, there are additional taxes that hotels incur, including the Transient Accommodations Tax and the General Excise Tax, passed on to customers.”
